the follicular phase // day one is day one

Updated: Nov 4, 2022

The follicular phase is the FIRST phase of your cycle.

Contrary to how our cycles are often discussed, “day one” is not the first day of your bleed DAY ONE is the first day AFTER your bleed ENDS.

I haven’t found an “expert” that count their cycles, the way I do, which I understand. The system (including all the great apps) all use “day one of your bleed” as “day one”.

NO THANKS 😊

Day one is DAY ONE lol I’m done going along with ANYTHING that is not TRUE to me, regardless of how much easier it makes things for those who’ve created or operate within the system.

“Your bleed as Day 1 is a medical reference that emerged from a time when only men were allowed to practice medicine. It's not the beginning for anyone who bleeds and who lives the experience. Your bleed is the culmination of your hormonal cycle, not the beginning.
The only reason the start of the bleed has been referenced as Day 1 of your cycle is that it was assumed that the bleeding phase is the only one you would notice or track and thereby make it easier for doctors to reference.
The confusion created by this exogenous labeling diminishes a woman's intuitive wisdom, devalues her physical experience, and robs her of self authority and self governance. The imprecise and deficient vocabulary available to describe our physical reality limits our experience of self and breeds doubt. Just as improvements must be made in research to eliminate gender bias, we as women must describe and define this physical experience for ourselves on our own terms as part of healing from patriarchal conditioning, honoring our bodies, and claiming our power."

- from "In the Flo" by Alissa Vitti

The follicular phase is Day 1-7 (of course it will vary slightly for each woman and there are ways that i will not be getting into that you can determine more precisely what day you are on, but i think for the purposes of getting accustomed to this lifestyle counting from when your bleed ends works fine)

For those who do not have a cycle you can follow the recommendations for each phase by syncing with the moon. The coinciding moon phase during the follicular is waxing.

Here's a little blurb about what else is going on during the follicular phase:

Hormones: RISING

Corresponding Season: SPRING

Dosha to balance: KAPHA

Moon phase: WAXING

The follicular phase is a great time to start new things, this is like spring time, move that kapha energy around so it doesn't get stuck, consider cardio and eating sprouted and fermented foods xo
